August Burns Red Pittsburgh Show Review
Recently, the Pittsburgh Area gained a new member to the venue family, The Roxian Theatre. With opening a new venue, you have to bring in some pretty big names to get the ball rolling, and bringing in August Burns Red and their Constellations Tour, celebrating ten years since their release of their album Constellations. To up the excitement, ABR brought along with them Silverstein, and Silent Planet.
Silent Planet opens up the show, and though their set was short, it certainly gave the show the kickoff it deserved. Getting up close and personal, as well as barefoot, lead vocalist Garrett Russell enters the stage. Starting off their set with the title track off their most recent album, “The New Eternity”, the band took the audience by storm. Another highlight included the song “Panic Room”, a song to address the severe effects that anxiety and depression can have on someone. In case you are an OG fan of Silent Planet, no need to fear, they were sure to play some of their debut album, The Night God Slept as well, including songs such as “XX (City Graves)”, “Native Blood”, and “Depths II”. It was surely a great start to the show, and a great lead in to the next band on the lineup, Silverstein.
The Canadian based band Silverstein approached their set with full force. Bringing a wide variety of their music to the show, from “Smashed into Pieces” off of their very first album When Broken Is Easily Fixed, all the way to their most recent single, “Burn It Down”. The band certainly did not lack character or energy as each member brought their own unique personality to their set, including guitarists Neil Boshart and Paul Marc Rousseau really playing off of each other both literally and physically, which was a real treat from a photographer’s standpoint. The band closd their set with “Afterglow” off of their most recent album, Dead Reflection. It definitely set the bar high for our headliner, August Burns Red.
August Burns Red has been working their way into the hearts of fans since 2003, and continue to do the very same today. However, we aren’t flashing that far back, but instead we’re rewinding it back to 2009 and the release of one of their most popular albums, Constellations. Being that it’s 2019, we’ve reached a milestone for the album, and it calls for a celebration, and what better way to celebrate than with a ten year anniversary tour? If that weren’t enough, the band also released a completely remixed version of the album, allowing the fans to experience the excitement all over again. The setlist is exactly what you would expect it to be, the entire album straight down to the same order of the tracklist, from “Thirty and Seven” all the way to “Crusades”. However, if you were expecting to have more variety, they did include a 5 song encore session of songs off of various other albums, including a drum solo from keyboardist Dustin Davidson and drummer Matt Greiner, and the closing song, “Composure” off of their 2007 album Messengers. Overall, it was a memorable evening for ABR fans, and we can’t wait to keep celebrating monumental moments like this with them for many years to come.

Society 1 Takes On Second Lock-down Challenge
Sammy Hagar and his CIRCLE band mates are using the Coronavirus downtime to release new music and video calling it the “Lockdown Challenge” which developed quickly into the “Lockdown Sessions”. The four musicians connected via their smartphones from four separate locations to record a brand new song and covers.
Upon seeing Hagar’s continued output of material Society 1 frontman Matt Zane was fascinated by this new but hopefully temporary medium of music and video creation. Zane’s band mates Jimmy Minj (Bass), Johnny Pilz (Guitar) and Zhenya Pro (Drums) were once again on board and went to work.
“When else are you going to have chance to create in this way in these circumstances? Why not go for it, get creative and see what happens?” said Zane
Zane and his band members once again worked on ideas sharing them through video conferencing ultimately crafting a new song called “I Reach Through”.
“No studio, 100% recorded from home. No producer. We just gathered some unfinished ideas that were around, bounced some new ideas off each other and just did it. It’s so immediate from start to finish. Definitely a unique change of pace. “
