baroness-1Recap of Baroness at Mr. Smalls May 8th

By: George Archibald

“Pittsburgh is one of the first four cities Baroness has ever played in.” – John Baizley

May 8th Mr. Smalls Theater played host to Cruces and Baroness. The venue was packed shoulder to shoulder to see Baroness preform hits from their newest release, Purple. Purple is the 4th full studio release from the band showcasing the singles, ‘Chlorine and Wine’, and ‘Shock Me.’ The original opening band Youth Code was not in attendance due to illness affecting the band.

Opening the show was Cruces a tour friend of Baroness that was filling in for the night as a favor. They had their own take on Psychedelic rock, that included heavy grooves, and many melodic riffs with a mix of 70s Prog thrown in the mix. The singer had a very strong voice. Vocally she sounded like Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane.

baroness-2Baroness was up next playing a collection of songs from the Purple, Yellow & Green albums through their main set. The songs were coordinated with their own lights from the album they were from. If you are unaware Baroness has named all 4 studio releases after colors, The Red Album, The Blue Record, Yellow & Green, and Purple. The band was very high energy as John Baizley (Vocals & Guitar), would constantly interact with the crowd. They closed their set with ‘The Gnashing’ from The Blue Record before ducking off stage momentarily. The shouts of “One More Song” echoed through the venue until the band returned to the stage to play an encore performance. The encore consisted of ‘Isak’ from The Red Album, and ‘Take My Bones Away’ from the Yellow & Green album.

All in all, this was a very entertaining show to watch as Baroness was on point all night. The band thanked the fans and reminisced about the all the times they have come to Pittsburgh to perform during the last 10 years. “Pittsburgh is one of the first four cities Baroness has ever played in,” proclaimed Baizley. The band will be on this current tour till June 3rd then picking up a few dates over the next few months.
