Interview with Cody Hanson and Marshal Dutton of Hinder
INFIDELITY, CRASHES… YET HINDER IS HERE TO STAY!
Baltimore Soundstage May 22nd 2017
Hinder made its way through Baltimore today leaving a trail of star crossed women in excitement, but still managed to keep the men entertained as well with a good ole rock and roll show. Empire Extreme got to hang out with drummer Cody Hanson and singer Marshal Dutton before they took stage tonight.
Empire: How’s the fan crossover been like playing with NonPoint?
Cody: We didn’t know what to expect coming into the tour, every band on this tour is quite a bit heavier than we are. Once we started preparing for the tour and going through the catalog we have quite a few songs that are heavy, we can hang in there live. People just come to hear a great song and just sing along.
Empire: How’s the band going now that you have the a new vocalist?
Cody: It’s great to have another guy on board that completes the team. Someone who pulls their weight, contributes fully, and cares about the band and the fans as much as we have. Having him around has made more efficient and allowed us to become happy and enjoy what we do again.
Empire: How was the process for you coming into the band?
Marshal: I just kind of filled in for a while.
Cody: It’s funny we would come to him and ask what do you think about this guy? Or should we try this guy? We stopped one day and said what the hell are we doing, why are we looking for someone, the guy we want and need is right there. We kinda had to convince him a little bit.
Marshal: I was a little nervous. Filling in was one thing, but assuming the role was very intimidating at first. I was afraid people would throw shit at me, but they didn’t , the fans were sweet and supportive.
Cody: You always have your tough guy haters behind a keyboard, but for the most part the fans that come are having a good time.
Empire: That’s one of the questions I was going to ask. What do you guys think about all the hatred for the band? And does it affect you any?
Marshal: It use to, but there’s no sense into reading a bunch of shit that’s going to hurt your feelings from some asshole that would never say that kind of stuff to your face.
Cody: I use to get pretty riled up, the turning point for me was when we got into our bus accident last year and we had a guy reach out online. He said “I really wish you guy would have died”. I was like wow. Fuck this, some people just suck and that’s that. It’s best to ignore all the bad people and focus on the good.
Empire: You touched on it a little, but how was the experience of the bus accident and how has it made you grow as a person?
Marshal: It was very traumatic, getting back on a bus. We cancelled the tour and didn’t go back into that till after February and this was in November. Just getting back on the bus and laying there and every time we hit a bump or rumble strip or hits the brakes, we tense up and wonder if we are going to impact again?
Cody: For me it still hasn’t gone away. If the bus is moving most of the time I’m still awake. It’s pretty scary man but you got to do what you got to do.
Marshal: I was actually lucky I was still in my bunk when we impacted. I woke up from the yelling upfront in the lounge and could hear the bus driver yell to get ready for impact. We hit the guard rail and the whole bus buckled, the roof buckled in. It was terrifying like a bomb went off. Then I was like are we sideways on the freeway are we going to get hit, should I brace for another impact.
Cody: We didn’t know what we are going to see, our driver he took the worse of it. There’s nothing to protect the driver. Luckily he was alive and they were able to get him out of there. He was screaming though, he was in a lot of pain. He ended up crushing all the bones in his legs and hands, broke all his ribs, couple of our guys broke ribs. That was our second one in two years we’ve been through. We have been through some shit in the last few years.
Empire: I saw something about you being in the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, how did they come to be and how was it?
Cody: It was awesome man, they just reached out to us, they gave us the rising star award. We’re along side a lot of talented musicians, I think Carrie Underwood just got inducted couple weeks ago. There’s a lot of talent that come out of Oklahoma that people don’t think about, It was a huge honor.
Empire: When you recorded “Lips of an Angel” were you expecting it to be a huge hit?
Cody: You have a good idea of what a hit is, but you never really know. Sometimes it the song that makes the hit, but a lot of times it the team that’s behind it. There’s a machine, a label, and money that makes it.
Marshal: Wasn’t there something that the label didn’t want to put that song on the record?
Cody: Yeah, our label thought it was a B side and didn’t want to put it on the album. We had to fight pretty hard just for it to make it on the album. Then when the album came out, they watched all the sales and that gave them a strong indication.
Empire: What’s been your favorite venue on the tour so far?
Cody: Machine Shop in Flint is always fun, we played that a few days ago. We had a good show in Juliette.
Marshal: The show is Wisconsin was cool. It was like an old church school house. The venue was in like the chapel bunch of classrooms.
Hinder came out on stage and the crowd loved it. Marshal is a natural born entertainer, commanding the stage and the audience, while Cody played the drums with precision and his curly hair bounced around. There was one girl in the crowd that was super excited to see the band, screaming out loud to the band and singing all the songs. Hinder played a good collection of songs from their five albums and a new album coming out. Pulling out songs from their first album Extreme Behavior the audience was loving the old school sounds of Hinder. While playing “Lips of an Angel” and “Get Stoned” Marshal got closer to the crowd and even took some lucky ladies phones and recorded himself and the band playing the songs. While walking around the stage, he also recorded the phones owner singing the song as well. This was my first time seeing Hinder and even though they are not everyone’s cup of tea, Hinder is high energy, fully entertaining band that is deserving of the spotlight.
