Interview with ChipZ’Nuff of Enuff Z’Nuff
Enuff Z’Nuff the gritty band that rocked that mid 80s and still continues to rock the place, came back to Baltimore for the M3 Festival.
Empire Extreme got to meet up with Chip Z’Nuff about playing the festival and a career that’s been active since 1984 and the debut album in 1989.
EE: Hows it going?
Chip: Well it’s M3. 17,000 people, it’s the 11th year they’ve had it. We’re grateful to be on it, we have been on it before. Anytime they reach out to it’s an honor. Baltimore is a great city, I remember playing at Hammerjacks all the time.
EE: Hows the response been from the Diamond Boy album you released last year?
Chip: Fantastic, I charted on the billboards, then we went right on tour all over the country and Europe did 20 some dates over there. The bands really tight now, and playing great, and on the off days we have been working on some new material.
EE: Working on the follow up album?
Chip: Absolutely, that’s what you have to do to stay consistent. We have a good home with frontier records. It will be coming out next year.
EE: How was it like recording the first album?
Chip: We were full of piss and vinegar, we were young kids. We were in Lake Geneva Wisconsin, monster rock was going on bands like Van Halen, Cinderella, and that’s where we recorded our album, Janes Addiction was recording their album also, we would sneak into the studio around 1am. We were all drunk, Skid Row was in the studio also. And then we recorded right after them. We had to much fun, we have friends out there and running behind the eight ball behind schedule doing to many extra activities, but we recorded 15 songs and then worked out to 10 songs. We ended up booking up with the people at MTV and they played our videos and the fans loved them. That record took off and we did some tours.
EE: How was it like having your first single “Fingers on it” being on the Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer soundtrack?
Chip: It was a miracle, I had a friend Steve Jones who works with Styx, he’s a videographer. He use to play drums for Enuff back in the early days. He was working on the movie and we gave him the record and he picked that song and that was the catalyst to start the band off. We really weren’t a glam band but we were glitter rock.
EE: What would you say to the youth of rock and rollers, what advice would you give them?
Chip: Play every single day, listen to as many records as you can. Figure out what style of music you want to play, find out what trips your trigger, and try to be as clean as possible. Be careful about your intake, drugs and alcohol can cloud your vision. Be nice to everyone as well.
EE: Anything else you want to say to the fans?
Chip: We want to thank everyone for the support. Come check us out on www.EnuffZNuff.com
Support your favorites bands and new bands like Greta Van Fleet and Rival Sons, I know they all need your support.
Enuff Z’Nuff put on a hell of a show at M3. They may have been the opener of the first day but they put the fans and the festival in the right head space for what was going to be a killer weekend. Playing 4 songs of the self titled album like Kiss The Clown, In the Groove and of course Flying High Michelle, Enuff rocked the stage and just showed the fans that rock isn’t dead and that good tunes and good times are still alive and kicking.
