Interview with Daniel Firth of Cradle of Filth
How’s does it feel to be on tour now after 2020, when the world of music touring was lost?
It’s a great feeling to be back on the road after so long. We kept ourselves pretty busy with writing and recording during the down time, but it still felt a bit like being stuck in purgatory. Playing shows face to face with the fans is a very welcome return to normality.
Touring with 3teeth and Once Human , how has that been?
They’re both really cool bands, and make for an interesting line-up. Musically, we’re all quite different, but complement each other well. They seem like nice people too, though I’ve been even more insular than usual on this tour as I attempt to keep within our ‘bubble’, so I haven’t been chatting to them a great deal. I hope they don’t think I’m being rude!
The new cradle album comes out Oct 22nd, What can fans expect?
They can expect something a bit different from the last two albums. I think we’ve been pretty bold and experimental at times, but the songs are more direct and concise overall. It’s a dynamic album, and every song really has its own identity. It may surprise a few people on first listen, but hopefully the fans will like it.
You have been with Cradle now for 9 years, how was it like working with Dani and how did you guys first meet?
We only met in person at my first rehearsal in July 2012, though we had been in touch over the phone before then. Dani and I have a good working relationship, and we have a laugh on tour as well. He’s always up for exploring the local surroundings and checking out some sights when we’re on the road, so that’s great. He also has an incredible memory for all the best record shops near venues!
I have seen that you were in a Misfits cover band, are you a Danzig or Michael Graves man?
Well, the cover band I was in exclusively played Danzig era songs, so I guess that answers your question. I actually do like the Graves albums too, but the other guys in the band wouldn’t have entertained the notion of playing those songs. I did play ‘Scream’ in the very first band I was in though, which was good fun.
It’s almost Halloween, what’s your fav horror movie? Also being in a band with Dani have you ever seen Cradle of Fear, does he keep that in a current loop of movies to watch on tour lol
There are a few contenders, but if I had to pick one it would probably be Evil Dead II. I love the atmosphere and effects, plus the tongue in cheek humour. As for Cradle of Fear, I have watched it in my own time and thought it was pretty entertaining. There’s no way Dani would ever sit us all down for a showing on the bus though.
If you could go back in time see one band that you never seen, who would it be?
I think it would have to be Queen back in the seventies. They’re a band that played a big part in my musical development, and judging from the recordings I’ve heard from that time, they were an absolute force live. They’re all masters of their craft, but in particular, seeing Freddie at the height of his powers would be incredible.
