Lords of Acid Pretty in Kink Album Review and Interview with Praga Khan
The Electronic Sexual Deviants that we all love Lords of Acid are about to release their latest album Pretty in Kink on May 18th. Empire Extreme got to listen to the album before it was released and got to talk to the man behind the filth Praga Khan.
Empire: Since you’re in Belgium and 6 hours ahead of me, how’s the future look?
Praga: (Laughs) The future. It’s sunny over here.
Empire: You excited about the album being released here soon?
Praga: Yeah, it took me some time to do it, there was a tour that came in between recording. It’s not easy to come out of the studio and go on tour, then go off tour and decompress and go right back into the studio. It’s a different atmosphere.
Empire: What will the fans get out of this album?
Praga: The fans were really involved with the making of this album. They came up with the album title, they decided what the subjects were going to be for the songs. I asked them what their Favorite album from Lords of Acid or favorite track to get a feel of what they would want in another version. It was kind of an experiment but I’m quite happy with the results.
Empire: My Favorite Album is still Lust.
Praga: You know we made that whole album in 3 weeks time. It all started with I Sit on Acid. We then got a call from Caroline Records asking us to make a record, we said we could but we are on the road. We said we would be back around Christmas but have to leave again around January 15th, we went into the studio and did one song everyday. Same thing happened with the Mortal Kombat album with The Immortals.
Empire: You guys have a new singer Marieke on this album?
Praga: Yeah Marieke. She calls herself “Little Bloody Mary”. I’m really happy with her, she’s a very good singer and classically schooled. She has a wide vocal range. The good thing for me also was that she’s living in Belgium, for me was easier to work with her in the studio. Usually I do the vocal tracks for the singer for a demo and most of the time it’s a problem because I have a male voice so it’s easier to adjust it.
Empire: Who had the idea for the cover of Our Little Secret?
Praga: It was our art director we had in those days, he came up with the idea. It was a great cover.
Empire: Yeah, there are a lot of people who didn’t realize it until the opened it up and see the full cover.
Praga: There are still a lot of people, that don’t realize it now. (Laughs)
Empire: What’s been you’re favorite song?
Praga: There all so different from each other, on stage the one that I really like is Voodoo You. It’s a very special song for me. I put all my aggression into that song from being in the studio and all the stuff from that.
Empire: What’s been craziest tour moment for you?
Praga: Yeah we had a lot of crazy things happen to us on tour, we did a show in San Diego and before we went to the show our tour manager told us the sheriff wanted to talk to us, because back then it wasn’t like now with every rapper talking about vagina, it was controversial then. The Sheriff came onto the tour bus with a list of 60 things we couldn’t do on stage. ( I still have that list somewhere) one of the things was you can’t use the microphone in a sexual way or something. Yeah was a lot of rules and I asked the sheriff what you want me to sign this? If I signed it, would be impossible with our show. So I just covered myself and signed it, I went on stage scared a little. It was a lot of fun too , on the left of the stage we had cops and on the right of the stage we had cops, and they were having the time of their life. Onstage with Lords of Acid and all the girls onstage while we played Pussy. A lot of strange things happen to us. We almost got killed once, you hear that one?
Empire: No, what happened?
Praga: 5 or 6 years ago we were playing in Salt Lake City, it was a guy who came on our tour bus. And said he wanted to talk to Frankie aka Groovy Man from My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, but he wasn’t on the bus with us, so he said that he would just wait. I said to the tour manager to get this guy off the bus, we didn’t know him. He was sitting next to me, the next thing the drummer from Kill Kult he was jumping on the guy, they started to hit him, Jackie from Kill Kult put a headlock on the guy, the drummer broke his hand and had to leave the tour, they said they saw a gun, but I didn’t see it plus I’m from Belgium and not use to people having guns. The police came and said he was a wanted criminal, and that they were looking for this guy for a long time and that we were very lucky, he had a lot of names from gang members on his phone and the police escorted us out of the state.
Empire: Wow that’s crazy. Are you guys coming back into the states to tour with the new album?
Praga: Yeah that’s what we are working on right now, going to tour in the fall. We are now trying to find the right support act.
Pretty in Kink is an amazing album that mixes all your favorite elements of Lords of Acid and adds a few more into the mix. The album has newcomer vocalist Marieke Bresseleers. Pretty in Kink starts off with Break Me, which for me is a perfect way to start the album. The music in this one is like a very dark gothic industrial sound and the vocals just add to it. Sex Cam Girl and Flow Juice bring back the nasty side of Lords of Acid, and that’s exactly how we like it. No filters and straight to the point sexual advancements. One of my other favorite tracks is What the Fuck. It’s got that more rap/hip hop flow to it but still has that Lords of Acid sound. This one makes me want to bang my head and makes everyone else look and ask “What the fuck are you listening to” and I just turn it up louder and flip the bird. The album ends with We are the Freaks, it’s got the a rap feel to it as well and slow nice flow with it. The vocals are in Spanish but still kills.
Pretty in Kink is a great album and just keeps me intrigued every time I listen to it. Lords of Acid can’t do no wrong. I can’t wait for them to come around and tour for this album. If you’re into Lords or you like your music uncensored and sexually filled then go out and grab this album.

ALICE IN CHAINS “BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE” VINYL REVIEW
Alice In Chains have Re-Released the 2009 album on vinyl. This album was the first Alice In Chains in 14 years and the first album with guitarist/singer Willam DuVall after Layne Staley passed away in 2002.
I was a huge Alice In Chains fan and was a big fan of both Layne and Jerry. When this album first came out I remember sorta pushing it the side only cause of sadness about Layne but after hearing “Check My Brain” I gave it a chance and was so glad that I did. This album is amazing and really put Alice In Chains back into the mainstream.
The vinyl not only looks super awesome but sounds amazing. If you’re a fan of Alice In Chains and into collecting Vinyl, this album is a must in your collection. It’s a great packed vinyl with 2 vinyls included.
Side A: All Secrets Known, Check My Brain and Last of My Kind. Side B: Your Decision, A Looking in View. Side C: When The Sun Rose Again, Acid Bubble, Lesson Learned. Side D: Take Her Out, Private Hell, Black Gives Away To Blue

VENDED: Album Review
9/20/24 sees the independent release of the full-length, self-titled debut album from Des Moines, Iowa natives Vended. Featuring vocalist Griffin Taylor, Simon Crahan on drums, Jeremiah Pugh on bass, Cole Espland on lead guitar, and Connor Grodzicki on rhythm guitar.
On this album they have taken more abrasive elements of nu metal as seen in the late 90s from bands like Slipknot and Soulfly and utilized elements of metalcore to slap a fresh coat of paint on the style. There are elements that remind me of the more modern and spastic styles of nu metal, similar to a band like Tallah.
Griffin’s vocal styling showcases mid-range screams as the main driving force bending the vocals. True to the nu metal elements, the rage and anger perceived from the screams are offset by the occasional catchy riff or fast talking, almost rapping stylized lyrics.
Crahan shows an impressive command of rhythm with his double bass drum. Driving each track forward with a machine gun-like purpose, which makes the more groove-oriented parts hit much harder. Crahan, in addition to the rest of the rhythm section (Espland and Pugh), all really work together well to keep the momentum moving forward while not sacrificing said groove.
While I wouldn’t call it album of the year or anything. It’s definitely worth checking out. Standout tracks: “Nihilism” and “The Far Side”.
Vended can be found on the usual socials. And the album is available on all streaming platforms. And physical copies can be purchased though https://www.officialvended.com

DevilSkin “Surfacing” EP
It’s been 4 years since Devilskin’s last album, “Red.” The New Zealand band has followed up with their new EP, “Surfacing.”
This 6-song EP starts off with “Whale Song,” which just rocks and puts you right in the mood for what Devilskin is going to bring. I love Jennie Skulander’s voice; it works perfectly with the tone and grittiness of the album.
The EP has two covers on it. “Barracuda,” which we reviewed before and is a great cover song. The band also takes a swing at Dio’s “Holy Diver.” I am pretty critical about anyone covering Dio. Most bands try too hard to sound like Ronnie, which doesn’t always work out. However, I like this cover because the band takes their own path when covering it and makes it their own.
“Let Me Breathe,” “Insects,” and “Unborn” round up the rest of the EP. Which makes the EP a great listen from beginning to end. There has been a great resurgence of bands coming from New Zealand that kick ass. DevilSkin is on top of that list of bands. I hope that they make it over to the US soon so we can get a chance to check them out live. If you’re into a great rock EP and want to listen to something new and fresh, I recommend checking out this EP.
